“Shaking it up” on Teacher Tube
March 29, 2007 | | 2 Comments
I am thankful that our school and Dept of Education have – so far at least – chosen to keep YouTube and many other social networking sites open in our schools. These are increasingly powerful tools that I hope we can continue to use as learing tools.
Now I see that a new, education-friendly alternative is out there. Teacher Tube bills itself as a teacher/student friendly site that is moderated for content. It is something that wehave needed for a while!
At last week’s Literacy and Learning Conference here in Fredericton, I used a slightly modified “New Brunswick” version of Karl Fisch’s “Did You Know” presentation to open the first day. Needless to say, it blew away many in the audience, and was discussion fodder for much of the next two days.
I see now that a newer, abbreviated offspring, named “Shape It Up” has appeared on Teacher Tube this morning. It’s kind of cool, the music is jazzier…and it works. But I still like Karl’s better.

Jeff,
I’m creating a presentation for parents on Internet Awareness so they can better understand the way that the Net Generation communicates. There are so many good aspects to sites like YouTube and Piczo. As educators, we need to find ways of filtering out the bad aspects and promoting the good. Kids want a voice and they need to be heard. YouTube is a great media of expression.

I have found more good than bad on YouTube. I personally really enjoy old computer television advertisements and public service announcements. I have tried TeacherTube it works exactly like YouTube. Seems like a neat idea.
I have to admit I am a proponent of blocking MySpace and Facebook in schools. I am not against those sites but they have absolutely no value in the classroom as they are “social networking” sites… much like meeting after school for drinks. Outside the classroom is fine, just not during school time. Many corporations are starting to block these sites as well.
Other than that, give ‘em the tools. If we want social networking, let’s do it in a regular blog or wiki that is not as easily accessible to “all”.
